It's official Miss Saigon is back on London West End stage at the Prince Edward theatre and I could not wait to get the best ticket! As a singer myself, I grew up hearing so much about the show and have sang some of the songs from the musical myself. It was like a dream come true to have the opportunity to see the actual show live.
Miss Saigon, "the legendary musical from the creators of Les Misrables,"depicted a tragic love story of a young Vietnamese girl, Kim, who falls in love with an American GI, Chris. The plot is the revival of Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly but sets during the Vietnam war in the 1970s.
Overall, I felt that the production did a fair amount of research on costumes, sets and choreographs resemble quite an accurate representations of the period and the setting (I won't comment about the music because it one of those elements taken from the original cast). I remember seeing Thai's greeting gesture (Waii) in some of the choreographs in Bangkok scenes. I felt it was thoughtful and creative.
About that cast, I enjoyed watching Jon Jon Briones who played The Engineer extraordinarily well. Alistair Brammer (Chris), and Tamsin Carroll (Ellen) both have amazing voices but I especially appreciated the duet between Ellen and Kim for the song "I Still Believe". Although I liked Eva Noblezada's (Kim) voice but I wasn't satisfy with her acting ability. But then again it would be unfair to compare her with Lea Salonga.
I was told that there is a Thai cast, Kittiphun Kittipakapom, in the ensemble too. This is considered extra special for us Thais because it is not often for a Thai to be a part of an international production like this. I am personally happy for him and would like to take this opportunity to thank him for setting an example to the next generations of Thai singers out there and show that one of us have made it to the West End!
To wrap this up, Miss Saigon's plot and theme were quite dark, which I personally like, but I would have to give Miss Saigon a 4 out of 5 purely because I think it can be much more emotional and dramatic. Overall, I still strongly recommend the show especially if you're a Les Misérables' fan.

สุดท้ายนี้ ขอสรุปว่าเนื้อเรื่อง และธีมของเรื่อง Miss Saigon นี่ออกจะดู dark (เข้มๆ เครียดๆหน่อย) ส่วนตัวชอบอะไรแบบนี้นะ แต่ก็ขอให้คะแนนเรื่องนี้ที่ 4เต็ม 5 ค่ะ เพราะคิดว่าสามารถเล่นให้ได้
